Travertine is a natural stone product that comes from Spain, Italy and Turkey and Egypt. It is literally cut out of the side of a mountain, and then cut into tiles which are then honed filled and polished. Travertine belongs to the larger family called limestone.
Granite is quarried all over the world. There are hundreds of different types of granite available mostly from Italy, Brazil, India, Spain, France, China, and the USA. Granite is an igneous rock that is formed when silica rich magma cools slowly under the earth’s surface. Granite forms larger crystals because it is below ground and takes a long time to cool.
Limestone is chalk that has been under enormous heat and pressure. It is present on the surface of earth, therefore there is no problem in mining it. Limestone is readily found in quarries all over the world. There are varying types -one of which is comprised of the compressed shells of ocean animals. Limestone is used in many ways including as an abrasive in toothpaste, and an additive to cereals and other foods for calcium. The world’s largest limestone quarry is in Michigan.
